Lenticular Printing Guidelines

These lenticular printing guidelines will help assure that your lenticular designs come to life with in the smoothest way. The Southern California Graphics lenticular printing experts can apply any lenticular effect to your project, including 3D, flip effects, zoom, motion, and more. We can help you get your design and format for print, but these lenticular printing guidelines will help make the whole process smoother.

Lenticular Printing Guidelines: Basic Points

Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign files are usually the best file format for our print specialists to work with. However, for simple flip images, TIFF or JPEG files can also be used.

Resolution:    300dpi

File Transfer:  You can directly upload your artwork to our FTP site.  For access information, please contact your SCG account representative.

Color:   Files should be supplied as CMYK.  If they are supplies as RGB there will be a shift in color as they are converted.

Bleed:    We require a 1/8” bleed for most files, except for 3D images which require 1/8” bleed on top and bottom and 1” bleed on left and right.

Hard Copy:  If possible, please provide a hard copy of your artwork for our reference.  This helps avoid any possible confusion and speeds up the printing process.

Lenticular Printing Guidelines: General Tips

  • Text should be at least 12 point San Serif font. Avoid very thin lines at they tend to break up and look pixilated underneath the lenticular lens.
  • Try to use textured backgrounds with color and avoid solid color backgrounds (especially white).
  • Animation can either be left to right or up/down. Up/down images simply work better. Unless you are using your lenticular as a display piece that people will be walking past, we recommend up/down animations.
  • Avoid strong contrast between elements of the image that will change.  For example, avoid having elements change from black to white as this will cause ghosting between the images.

3D Vs. Animation

All lenticular images can be classified into two types of effects: 3D and Animation. It is important to distinguish between which type you have to follow our lenticular printing guidelines.

3D images don’t change.  They have the illusion of depth between the elements of the image but look the same from all viewing angles.

Animated lenticular images can include anything from flip 2 or 3 images flip between one to the other) to Zoom (an image that gets progressively larger in each frame) to a motion image that animates through a large series of frames.

Here are our lenticular printing guidelines for both 3D and animated images.

Animated Image Tips

Animated lenticular images can include anything from flip 2 or 3 images flip between one to the other) to Zoom (an image that gets progressively larger in each frame) to a motion image that animates through a large series of frames.

Here are our lenticular printing guidelines for both 3D and animated

  • Try to keep at least the background constant in each image.  The more similar the background is in each frame, the more clearly the parts that changes will stand out.
  • The more frames that are used, the less clearly you will see each one.   This can help with something fluid, like a ball throw, but can hurt if the frames are meant to be completely distinct.  So try to keep the number of frames down, as more frames usually means more ghosting.

3D Image Tips

  • Image should be sent as a layered Photoshop file, with each image element it’s own completed layer.
  • Depth is only relative between objects, so you need a significant number of elements to compare to give a true sense of depth to the image.
  • A textured background layer will also help create more depth.
